As a business owner you cannot ignore the power of the internet. It is here now and to stay for a while. It is the fastest most powerful advertising medium we have ever had, and it keeps growing.

If like many of the people I have talked to in the last year, you have been taken by someone who promised a position on page one or even first in Google, but you did not get the results you expected, you are probably more careful in your selection of a SEO Specialist.The problem according to my sources is that you do not know what to ask, or if you ask the right questions, the answers are confusing. 

 

Here are a few tips to get the best for your search engine optimization:

 

 

Fist you should know what are “Your Goals“, what do you want your site to accomplish for you?

Then you should not be talking to a sales person. Sales people are there to sell you a product or a service, they do not have the SEO knowledge to answer your questions.

You then should ask what guarantee they are willing to give you of a particular placement. This is a little trick question that will quickly eliminate some of the charlatans, as nobody can guarantee anything when it comes to Google or any search engine. Position is fluid and will vary of course on the particular keyword, on the data center that is being queried by the search engine. It will also vary from day to day. You might get to position one on a particular day then slip back a couple of positions, only to move up again. Page one is the goal and a good SEO will get you there on a specific keyword, not even the very best can guarantee position one. 

You should know what technics your SEO specialist  will use to improve your page ranking.  The first things that an SEO specialist will do is analyse the site, keyword research, and with your input keyword selection. If these elements are missing from the answer then I suggest you look for someone else.

You should ask your specialist or consultant to show how his/her site ranks for their industry keywords, if they cannot get their site ranked how do you expect them to get your to do so.

You could ask for testimonials, I am a little hesitant about this, because in this day of impersonal, long distance dealings, this is something that can be “tweaked”. You should feel that you can trust the person you are dealing with. If you know a local consultant and can meet him/her that would even be better. 

Finally I want to give you a word of caution about some companies that will design and maintain the site for you. Many are reputable companies and you will be well served. But many will only put up a site for you, and collect a monthly fee but will not do anything else to help you. Before you sign up insure that you know what you are signing. Will you own the site? If you break the relationship will you be able to take your site with you to another server?

The SEO specialist should offer link building as one of the services he/she provides. Link building is a highly effective means of getting high listings in search engines because the more “connections” your site has, the more the search engines will trust its reputation, thus according it a higher placement.

The SEO consultant you choose should provide submission of your website to directories to ensure that your website is frequently crawled by search engine bots.

You should be able to choose from a variety of different SEO packages, to select the one that best fit your needs and your business.

Should you decide to do you own optimization, the SEO consultant should be willing to train you. There are no secrets into optimizing a site only skills that can be acquired.
